philatelia.

| Sunday 20 May 2007

This is Philatelia, situated at 1, Moti Sil street. It is situated right in the hundrum of chandni and metro gully and yet this place, tucked into the alley of two big business-houses, was desolate, cold and looked very pleasing. The owner is Mr. Manik Jain, an elderly gentleman, a philatelic and numismatic author and publisher. This is his publishing house and this place has been here since 1980s. His publishing house is for serious hobbyists only, he made that clear to me and he also stated that his publishing house doesn't go for the kolkata book fair. I should also add that he was quite surprised when I pushed the door, entered inside and flatly asked him what is done here!

This is fantastic!!

I am an entusiastic Philatelist and was searching for the catalog of Philatelia. Apparently, it doesn't even have a website but still comes out with the most comprehensive catalog on Indian philately.

The pics are an added bonus. Quaint and unassuming Philatelia.

Abhay

I guess cold and desolate is the right word. Here's my take on it, becoz am a philatelist too. See its still considered to be a very esoteric hobby and some of the " serious" gentlemen with their exclusive stiff upper lip attitude are making it more so.. this was ok in the 1950s but now we need to make things popular. That only goes with proper marketing and some good behaviour. You call on the no that is advertised in their Phila India Handbook and find their response... its cold indeed. Please , we also should encourage youngsters into such things, where we are competing with TV and reality shows. Its a wonderful hobby, and just as they say that noone is greater than the game ...similarly noone is greater than the hobby. Hope someone comes with better attitude and does some promotion. this is 2009, we need vibrancy!
